Establishing a Nighttime Skincare Routine

by Corinne Shoemaker

Skincare is often the last thing people think about when coming home after a long day of work and socializing, but establishing a nighttime skincare routine is one of the most important components of keeping skin youthful and healthy. The following are some of the most important steps in any nighttime skincare routine, along with an explanation of why each one is vital.

1. Cleansing

From smog and wind to the buildup of oils and pore-clogging makeup, the skin endures a lot of stress throughout the course of an average day. Studies show that the skin heals itself best at night, but it can only do so much without a blank canvas to work with. Using a gentle cleanser, such as the Moisture Positive Cleanser by Bioelements, is a great way to remove makeup, dirt and excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Going to bed without using a cleanser to remove any traces of makeup can leave product trapped in the pores overnight, which leads to irritation and breakouts.

2. Exfoliating

The skin experiences a significant amount of trauma throughout the day, most of it unnoticed. Cold weather is an especially harsh culprit as it dries the skin, leaving dead skin cells behind. These dead skin cells in turn clog pores and prevent hydrating serums and anti-aging products from setting in properly, rendering the rest of a nighttime skincare routine less effective. To combat this problem, use a gentle exfoliating brush, such as the Exfoliating Face Brush by Dermalogica for Cleansing Massage. This brush has soft bristles that gently clear away residual makeup, dead skin cells and excess oils, and it pairs well with a hydrating cleanser for an ultra-clean feel.

3. Moisturizing

Moisturizing is a step many people leave out of their nighttime skincare routine to great detriment. While it may seem like moisturizing during the day to create a smooth foundation for makeup is more important, nighttime is when the skin is hardest at work to repair itself and create a smooth complexion. This means that skincare products are at their most effective when used at night before bed. To maximize the effectiveness of a nighttime skincare routine, choose a moisturizer that offers more than one benefit. Crucial Moisture by Bioelements soothes dry, irritated skin with essential oils, evens out the skintone, reduces tightness and flaking from dry skin and diminishes the signs of aging, making it a serious skincare multitasker.

4. Getting Plenty of Sleep

Getting enough sleep is one of the most important aspects of any nighttime skincare routine. While the body sleeps, the skin absorbs excess moisture being processed for removal. Not getting enough sleep not only leaves the skin dehydrated but creates a moisture imbalance that makes wrinkles more visible, leads to under-eye circles and makes it impossible for the skin to heal damage properly.

Following a nighttime skincare routine may seem like an added chore at the end of the day, but it pays serious dividends. From keeping skin hydrated to reducing the signs of aging, the skin is a powerhouse of rejuvenation at night, which is something everyone concerned about skincare should take advantage of.
