5 Lies About Washing Your Face

by Corinne Shoemaker

As easy as washing your face is, there is a lot of potential for making mistakes and ruining your skin. That’s why we’ve developed a list of eight face-washing mistakes we all make at one time or another. Read onto learn how you can keep from making them yourself to ensure gorgeous, healthy skin!

1. Washing Will Remove Your Makeup

Despite what you may have been taught, cleansing alone is not usually enough to get all of your makeup off of your face. To keep your pores from clogging and causing blemishes, use makeup-removal wipes prior to washing. This is especially important when it comes to your eyes and the areas around your nose. If you don’t have makeup-removal wipes, double-cleansing with an oil-based wash can work. Try Precleanse by Dermalogica.

2. Any Cleanser Will Do

So many different types of cleansers exist because different skin types exist. You have to experiment to find the one that’s right for you. For example, if you have oily skin, you may prefer a foaming cleanser like Flash Foam Cleanser by Bioelements to a regular one as it will leave your face feeling extra clean. Of course, no matter what your skin type is, you should avoid fragrances, parabens, and other harsh ingredients that can harm skin.

3. Use A Brush

While using a brush on your skin can eliminate buildup more effectively than your hands, you need to be careful not to over-do it. Otherwise, you can irritate and inflame the skin. On that note, don't use an exfoliating cleanser more than once or twice a week for the same reason. Use Exfoliating Face Brush by Dermalogica.

4. You Should Wash Twice Per Day

While there doesn’t exist a standard for how often you should wash your skin, doing it too often is a bad idea as it can dry out your skin and cause irritation. Of course, there are situations where you should always wash your face, such as after exercise. If, however, your skin is very dry or sensitive, wash just once per day in the evening. You should also be using a gentle cleanser like Sensitive Skin Cleanser by Bioelements (which is formulated with soothing ingredients like olive oil).

5. You Can Close Your Pores

Despite popular belief, cold water doesn’t close your pores – that’s because they can’t close. Using extremely hot or cold temperatures on your skin can actually irritate it, so you want to stick to lukewarm water. Of course, clearing out your pores is a different story since it helps prevent blemishes and keeps your skin from looking dull. Check out this article to learn how you can easily unclog your pores.
