Easy DIY Fall Beauty Recipes

by Corinne Shoemaker

Plastic jack-o-lanterns are popping up in stores all over the country, ghost stories are being prepped, and our mouths are watering in anticipation of all the pumpkin spice lattes that are soon to be had. It can mean only one thing: fall is almost here! And we’re providing you -- our gorgeous readers -- with easy DIY pumpkin beauty recipes to help get you excited for the wonderful months ahead of us…

Pumpkin Benefits

Before we get into the recipes, we just want to share with you some of the many ways that pumpkin makes a wonderful addition to your beauty regimen. First of all, it is flowing with important enzymes and alpha hydroxy acids that will brighten and smooth your skin, while vitamins A and C soften and soothe it. Pumpkin also contains zinc which helps balance hormone and oil production as well as heal the skin (so it’s great for those who suffer from acne)!

When it comes to your hair, pumpkin can also be extremely beneficial! The vitamin A and potassium will nourish your scalp while promoting healthy hair growth. Pumpkin is also great for hydrating dry or damaged hair.

Okay, onto the recipes!

1. Pumpkin Face Mask

What you need...

- 1/2 cup pure pumpkin puree

- 1 teaspoon lemon juice

- 1 teaspoon honey

- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

Combine all of the ingredients listed above until they form a paste. Make sure your skin is clean, then pat the mixture over your face and neck, allowing it to rest for fifteen minutes. Wash it off. The lemon juice will act as a toner for your skin while the honey heals and prevents scarring. If you choose to add sugar, it will act as an exfoliator, ridding your skin of dead skin cells and other impurities. Combined with the lemon juice, your skin will become brighter while also enjoying all the benefits of the pumpkin puree!

2. Pumpkin Hair Mask

What you need…

- Pure pumpkin puree (just enough for your hair length)

- 1/4 cup coconut oil

Combine the pumpkin puree and coconut oil. Rinse your hair with warm water to open up your cuticles, allowing deeper penetration of the mask. Apply the mask to your hair while focusing on your roots. Allow it to rest for 20-30 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Follow this up with cold water to close your hair cuticles and to create a smooth finish. The coconut oil will help stimulate hair growth, promote a healthy scalp, moisturize hair, and a provide a host of other benefits! Basically, this mask is a must for the spooky months ahead.

3. Pumpkin Scrub Sugar Cubes

What you need…

- Fragrance-free bar soap

- 1/4 cup coconut oil

- Pumpkin oil

- 1 cup sugar

- Ice cube tray

Grate your bar soap until you are left with half a cup of shavings. Melt the coconut oil in your microwave, then pour it into the shavings along with a couple of drops of your favorite fragrance (we prefer pumpkin)! Follow this up with food coloring if desired. Mix everything together, then pour in the sugar and combine it with a spoon. Finally, scoop the mixture into the individual ice cube molds and pat them down. Place them in your freezer for one hour.
