8 Makeup Mistakes You Really Need to Stop Making

by Corinne Shoemaker

There are so many steps to applying makeup correctly that it’s easy to make mistakes. We’re here to help! We’ve laid out eight of the most common (and obvious) makeup mistakes so that you can learn how to keep your face looking as flawless as possible. Read on…

  1. Using the wrong shade for your foundation.

If you want to avoid looking like an oompa loompa, you have to be careful about the color you pick for your foundation -- don’t go too dark or too light. Test out a shade before buying it by applying a bit of it onto your hand and seeing how it matches up with your skin. Pick a shade as close to your skin color as possible to keep it looking as natural as possible.

  1. Forgetting to blend your foundation.

It doesn’t matter how flawless your makeup looks if it doesn’t match up with the color of your neck. Always bring your foundation down and blend it out.

  1. Making your eyebrows too thick.

We all want thick, gorgeous brows, but go a little too heavy with your pencil and you’ll wind up looking less like Cara Delevigne and more like Oscar the Grouch. Don’t be too generous with your eyebrow makeup. It is equally important that you find the right shade for your brows; experiment with different colors until you find the right one.

  1. Going overboard with eye shadow.

This is yet another mistake that can easily be avoided but seems all too common. You don’t need a ton of powder to make your eyes stand out. Focus most of the powder on the outer corners of your eyes and work your way forward, getting lighter as you go.

  1. Highlighting without contouring.

Applying extra concealer to the skin under your eyes is important for brightening your face and helping to hide circles. However, if you do this without contouring, you will be left with odd-looking bright circles under your eyes that will grab onlookers’ attention for all the wrong reasons. Be sure that you contour to prevent this.

  1. Applying way too much bronzer.

We all want to look a little darker, but over-applying bronzer is not the way to go. Doing so will just make your face look dirty and unnatural. A little bronzer goes a long way -- focus on the apples of your cheeks, your forehead, and along your jawline.

  1. Going crazy with blush.

Just like with bronzer, a little blush can go a long way. After you apply bronzer to the apples of your cheeks, go over them with just a touch of blush.

  1. Over-drawing your lips.

Bigger lips may be better, but at the end of the day, you still want them to look like, well, lips. Over-drawing them with your lip liner will only cause them to look fake. Don’t stray too far past your natural lip line and you won’t end up looking like BoBo the Clown.
