Why Oil is Essential to Curly Hair

by Leslie Rosario
Hi I’m Leslie! I'm a hairstylist at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ. Today I'm going to be talking about hair oil and its importance to curly hair.
Oil is an essential part of any curly hair care routine. It helps to keep the hair moisturized, prevents breakage, and adds shine. Without oil, curly hair can become dry, brittle, and prone to breakage.

Benefits of Oil for Curly Hair

From one curly hair girl to another, you and I both know how our hair can be brittle, dry, frizzy, and dull in appearance. Oil is a great way to keep curly hair moisturized and healthy all while adding much needed shine. It does this by locking in moisture which prevents dryness and frizz. This is especially important for curly hair which tends to be more prone to these factors than any other hair type.
Curly hair is naturally more prone to breakage due to its coiled structure, and oil can help.  Applying oil to the hair helps to lubricate the strands making them more flexible and reducing risk of breakage.  Additionally, oil helps protect hair from heat damage caused by styling tools like curling irons and blow dryers.

How to Use Oil for Curly Hair

One of the best ways to use oil for curly hair is to apply it after washing and conditioning. Start by applying a small amount of oil to the palms of your hands and then apply it to the mid-lengths and ends since that is where most breakage occurs. Some people also like to apply oil to their roots but I only recommend this if you are doing a pre-shampoo oil treatment.  Applying to the roots can weigh your curls down and cause your hair to get oilier faster - something to keep in mind!
It’s also important to use the right oil for your hair type.  Oils have different properties so it's essential to choose one that will work best for you. Some of the most popular oils for curly hair include coconut, argan, moroccan, sunflower seed, and jojoba. Each of these oils has its own unique benefits, so experiment to find the ones that works best on your curls.

Some recommendations for hair oils

When leaving hair in its natural state and for all hair types, I recommend Apira Hair Repair Serum. This product is a combination of coconut oil for softness, jojoba oil for shine, and sunflower seed oil for strength. For all types of curls, I highly recommend Verb Ghost Oil. This is a lightweight oil that provides amazing moisturizing, shine, and strengthening benefits without weighing your hair down. And for those with very coily hair, I suggest going with Pattern Jojoba Hair Serum. This oil is thicker than your regular hair oil and it locks in intense levels of moisture without leaving excess residue on the hair, perfect for those coils!

When blow drying, Moroccan Original Treatment can be used before or after styling. This treatment's key ingredient is argan oil which is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E.  Once again, Verb Ghost Oil is great for either leaving your hair in its natural state or blow drying, which is a win in my book!

Quick Summary

In conclusion, oil is an essential part of any curly hair care routine helping to keep the hair moisturized, preventing breakage, and adding shine. Without oil, curly hair can become dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. It’s important to choose the right type of oil for your hair type and apply it after washing and conditioning for maximum benefits. With the right oil and proper application, you can keep your curly hair healthy and looking its best!
