How to Manage Curly Hair

by Brianna Thompson
Managing curly hair can be a challenge. It takes a bit more effort and patience to get it looking its best. But with the right techniques and products, you can tame those curls and have them looking their best.

Here are some tips for managing curly hair:

Find the right products.

Curly hair is naturally dry, so you want to use products that will help to moisturize and define your curls. Look for shampoos, conditioners, and styling products that are specifically designed for curly hair. Avoid products that contain sulfates or silicones, as these can strip your hair of its natural oils and cause frizz. Also, quick hot tip is to scrunch in your products for ultimate definition. Alot of my recommendations for curly hair are from Ouidad and Matrix A Curl Can Dream which you can find here at the Warehouse Salon. Don't over-wash.

Over-washing can also strip your hair of its natural oils, so you want to avoid washing your hair every day. Aim to wash your hair every 7 days, or as needed. You can also use a co-wash, which is a conditioner that is designed to cleanse your hair without stripping it of its natural oils. Over washing will cause dry and brittle hair.

Use a wide-toothed comb or a detangling brush.

Start from the ends of your hair, working your way up to the roots. You can also detangle your hair while it's wet and coated with conditioner, which will help to minimize breakage. Make sure to be very gentle and caring when brushing your hair, it is especially prone to damage when it is wet,

Use the right technique when styling:

When styling your hair, avoid using a brush or comb, as this can cause frizz. Instead, use your fingers to gently style your curls. You can also use a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer to help define your curls and minimize frizz. If your hair is tangled, make sure you brush and detangle when it is completely wet and use a leave in conditioner to help.

Protect your curls while you sleep.

When you sleep, your hair can become tangled and flattened, so it's important to protect your curls while you sleep. You can sleep with your hair in a pineapple, which is a high ponytail on the top of your head, or use a silk or satin pillowcase, and bonnet which will help to minimize frizz.

Managing curly hair can take some time and effort, but with the right techniques and products, you can have beautiful, defined curls that will make you feel confident and gorgeous.
