How to Air-Dry Your Hair (and Have it Look Amazing)

by Corinne Shoemaker

Air-drying hair is great not only because it’s way easier than using hot tools, but also because it’s better for our strands (overheating leads to frying and frizz – yikes!) Unfortunately, if you aren’t careful, your lack of effort will show. Read on to learn how you can take the easy road to gorgeous, heatless locks.

Pick the Right Tools

Towel: Most bath towels are made of rough fibers that can do real damage to strands. This is why you want to be super gentle when drying your hair. Pat instead of rub. Also, you shouldn’t twist it into a towel (the weight will pull at your roots and lead to breakage). Finally, to minimize damage, be sure that you stick to ultra-absorbent towels, or just use a soft cotton t-shirt!

Brush: No brush will distribute a formula more evenly through your hair than a wide-tooth comb, and this is critical if you want to get the most out of your products. It will also be more gentle on your strands than other brushes. Your hair is weakest when wet, so it’s very important that you keep this in mind no matter what you are doing to it!

Product: Use a leave-in conditioner. In addition to helping eliminate knots, this will reduce frizz and keep hair hydrated and healthy. We recommend PRAVANA's Nevo Intense Therapy Leave-In Treatment which moisturizes hair and even protects it against UV damage.

Sculpt Your Strands

There’s no easier way to ensure gorgeous heatless locks than with a texturizing spray! Try Kenra's Platinum Dry Texture Spray 6 which provides just the right amount of texture, volume, and shine for freshly-wash strands. Of course, you can also try an overnight method to shape hair while it dries. With a quick search, you will find countless tutorials. Here are a few easy ones:

Don’t Touch

As tempting as it will be to play with your pretty locks, you want to refrain from touching them too much, especially if you have fine hair. The oils in your fingers can weigh down your hair and make them go greasy faster.
