Hair Breakage? Stop Doing These 6 Things

There are lots of reasons why you may be dealing with hair breakage, but it all pretty much comes down to one thing: how gentle you are with your strands. In the day-to-day rush of life, it’s not always an easy thing to be aware of – especially when there are so many opportunities to forget. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the six most damaging things people tend to do that lead  to hair breakage. Read on to learn what they are and how you can keep your hair safe.


Towel Drying.

Thought it may feel good to rub the moisture out of your scalp with a warm towel, doing so will create big problems for your delicate locks. Instead, take a super soft t-shirt and very gently squeeze the water from your hair. It takes a little more time, but your hair will thank you for it.

Using the Wrong Pillowcase.

While you dream about taking over the world and partying with Taylor Swift, you are sure to toss your head around a little. With the wrong pillowcase, this means losing your hair’s vital oils and lots of breakage. To protect your hair, use a pillowcase made of silk or satin.

Using a Hot Setting on Your Dryer.                                                              

When it comes to your hair, the less heat you use, the better. Applying heat, especially without protection, will dry out your cuticles and make your hair very brittle (which, of course, will lead to a ton of breakage). It’s best to let your hair air dry at least 70% of the way before using a dryer (try Kenra's Platinum Blow-Dry Spray). When you do use the dryer, be sure that it is at its coolest temperature and don’t let it any closer than six inches from your locks.

Using a Plastic Brush
This is a very bad idea, especially if you’re just getting out of the shower. Because plastic bristles are so rigid, it is a lot easier to simply tear through and break your strands (an issue which is amplified when your strands are wet since this is when they are most vulnerable). Opt for a nylon brush which is gentler and better distributes the oils in your hair.


Over-Brushing Your Hair

You’ve been lied to – 100 strokes a day (or any kind of excessive handling of your hair) is bad news for your cuticles, causing them to fray and leading to hair breakage. If you want super strong and healthy locks, brush as little as possible, and use a wide-tooth comb.


Tying Your Rubber Band Too Tight

The tighter you pull your hair back, the easier it is to damage your cuticles and hair follicles which leads to a tremendous amount of breakage and even balding. Use very gentle hair ties and never tie your hair back too tightly.
