7 Summer Hacks for Gorgeous Hair

by Corinne Shoemaker

Along with summer comes brighter days, looser hairstyles, and stolen kisses in the rain. Don’t let your locks get in the way of having a good time! Here are some quick hacks to help you manage and prevent any summer hair woes that might strike.

  1. Pre-soak your strands.

If you’re planning on hitting the beach or the pool, take a second to rinse your hair beforehand. This will prevent the chlorine or salt from damaging your strands. Leave-in conditioner works as well. We love PRAVANA's Nevo Intense Therapy Leave-In Treatment.

  1. Bring a t-shirt to the beach.

A shower towel is never a good idea for your hair. The cloth strips too much moisture from your hair, and the rough texture leads to breakage. A t-shirt is much softer. Pat your hair dry and it will do far less damage.

  1. Pick the right products.

Since you will be at greater risk of sun damage, you should choose hair products that are formulated to moisturize and protect like Kenra's Daily Provision. For smooth, hydrated tresses, look for words like “hydrating,” “UV protection,” “sulfate-free,” and “alcohol-free.”

  1. Keep some baking soda handy.

If you have blonde hair, the copper in a swimming pool could turn your hair green (yikes)! To remedy this, make a paste out of baking soda by mixing it with water. Spread it through your hair and rinse, then wash with a clarifying shampoo, like Snobgirls’ Detoxcure Prowash.

  1. Use a deep-conditioning mask.

This is a good idea, especially if you have color-treated hair (which is particularly prone to drying out from sun exposure). Getting into a weekly routine will ensure radiant, healthy strands. Try PRAVANA’s Nevo 60 Second Deep Treatment mask. It uses natural ingredients that allow it to work 3-5 times faster than regular masks.

  1. Protect your scalp.

If your scalp tends to burn easily, dilute a bit of sunscreen in a spray bottle and apply at the roots. If you want to avoid looking oily (on your scalp or your face) apply a powder sunscreen with a makeup brush. Easy!

  1. Just roll with it.

If your hair does suffer from damage and you just can’t contain your frizz, try smoothing it with a serum like Sudzz FX's Zenyth Frizz Eliminator, then throw it back into a messy bun or a braid. Make your hair work for you.
