If you’re trying to get thicker hair, but your locks just aren’t cooperating, you’ve come to the right place! Thin, dull hair can be boring and difficult to style, but by taking the right steps (and with a bit of product) you can totally nail that bombshell hairstyle you’ve always wanted! Here are our tricks…
1. The basics
Everything starts with how you clean your hair – and how often. Everyone knows you’re supposed to limit your washing to protect your hair from damage, but it also makes your hair appear fuller at the roots. Of course, you want to be sure you’re using the right shampoo and conditioner since these products have the most contact with your hair. Pick a shampoo that is formulated specifically to help the follicles on your scalp stand up. Try SnobGirls Bodydense Prowash Volume Body Lift which will help strengthen your hair and thicken its structure. Avoid conditioners that advertise the words “hydrating” or “smoothing” as these usually have oils that will weigh your hair down.
2. Switch your part
Consistently parting your hair to the same side will cause it to go flat pretty fast. Switch it up. Go over any unruly pieces with a bit of hairspray like Kenra's Volume Spray 25, and boom – volume!
3. Hit the salon
Layers are a good idea if you want to give the appearance of thicker hair. The longer your hair is, the more it weighs down on your head. By shortening different sections, you can retain the over-all length of your cut while reducing the weight.
4. Use volumizing mousse instead of spray
While a spray formula can be effective in perking up your roots, a mousse will treat all of your hair, providing thickness and shine from the top, down. We recommend Kenra's Professionial Platinum Thickening Mousse. This is a special product because it gives your hair the volume you want without any of the weight. It is also humidity and frizz-resistant.
To help amp up your hair, start by flipping it to one side and “rough-drying” it with your fingers. Then, spray your hair with heat protectant like PRAVANA's Nevo Invisible Control Heat-Activated Thermal Protectant. Grab a round brush and take individual sections of your hair, pulling each out to the side at a right angle, to style. This is better than the traditional method of flipping your hair over and toward the ground because it will add thickness to every part of your hair instead of the roots alone. However, you should limit your blowdrying to about three times per week to prevent breakage.
6. Go curly
Waves and curls always look thicker than straight strands. With summer so close, now is the time to grab your texture spray like Kenra's Platinum Dry Texture Defining 6 Spray
and start rocking some beach waves! Of course, for those with very fine hair, the curlier you go, the better; get out your curling iron or go old-school with some velcro rollers, and finish off with a flexible hairspray like DevaCurl's Flexible-Hold Hair Spray.
7. Beware of the sun
Too much exposure to UV rays can cause your hair to turn brittle and break easily. It can even cause hair loss (yikes)! If you’re going to be out in the sun for long, especially during the summer, make sure you bring a hat. You may also want to consider products that are formulated to protect against UV damage. For example, you could try Kenra's Professional Shine Spray which will protect your hair from both UV damage and the frizz that will come with the rainy days ahead.
